Types of Pimples

Do you want to identify the type of pimple you have and learn how to properly treat it? Knowing the type of pimple you have is the key to getting rid of it for good. Read on to learn about the four main types of pimples and how to treat them.

Whiteheads, or closed comedones, occur when a pore is clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. They are often small, white, and can resemble a tiny bump, hence the name.

  • Treating Whiteheads:non-prescription topical medications, such as salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or tea tree oil, to reduce inflammation and dry out the blemish
  • Preventing Whiteheads: keeping skin clean, using facial masks regularly, and using oil-free moisturizers.

Blackheads, or open comedones, occur when the skin pores are clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. Unlike whiteheads, blackheads are open at the surface and have a black or dark brown appearance, due to oxidation.

  • Treating Blackheads: gentle exfoliation with a facial scrub, medicated creams and masks, chemical peels or Tretinoin (a prescription topical retinoid product)
  • Preventing Blackheads: avoiding the use of oil-based cosmetics and keeping the skin properly hydrated.

Pustules are red bumps with white or yellow centers. They are caused by inflammation of the skin and usually contain a bacterial infection.

  • Treating Pustules:using topical antibiotics, retinoids, or other anti-inflammatory medications
  • Preventing Pustules:following a good skin care regimen that involves using a gentle cleanser, using sunscreen, and avoiding touching the face.

Cysts are large, deep pimples that are often painful. They are caused by severe inflammation, bacteria, and can form when a pore becomes completely blocked with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria.

  • Treating Cysts:prescription medications, such as antibiotics and retinoids, or in severe cases, an injection of a steroid into the cyst
  • Preventing Cysts:following a good skin care regimen and avoiding touching the face.

Learning about the different types of pimples and how to properly treat them is key to getting rid of them for good. For best results, ensure you properly cleanse and moisturize your skin, use medicated creams and masks, and seek professional advice from a dermatologist if needed.
