Hemorrhoids are common, yet bothersome, issues for many people. Hemorrhoids can be both painful and itchy, making life uncomfortable. So, what do hemorrhoids look like?
What Are Hemorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids are swollen veins located in and around the anus and rectum. Hemorrhoids can be of two types:
- Internal hemorrhoids – located inside the rectum
- External hemorrhoids – located around the anus
What Do Hemorrhoids Look Like?
While appearance of the hemorrhoids may vary, most often they look like:
- External Hemorrhoids: External hemorrhoids often appear as swollen, lumpy veins around the anus. The swollen veins may look purplish or bluish, and may be tender to the touch.
- Internal Hemorrhoids: Internal hemorrhoids may appear as pink, fleshy bumps just inside the anus. In some cases, they may bulge out when you go to the bathroom.
When to See a Doctor
If you notice any of the signs of hemorrhoids and suspect you may have them, it is best to see a doctor. Simple hemorrhoids may be treated with lifestyle lifestyle changes and home remedies, such as eating a high-fiber diet and using soothing ointments. Your doctor may also recommend treatments such as surgery or rubber band ligation if more serious symptoms develop.
