What Causes Pimples
Pimples are one of the most frustrating skin issues. Though they occur in both men and women, teenage girls and boys commonly fuss over the unsightly blemishes. Though the cause of acne (the medical term for pimples) is still unknown, researchers have identified the common factors contributing to its appearance.
Hormones
The biggest contributor to pimples is hormones. When puberty starts, androgens (male hormones) increase in both boys and girls, leading to pimples. Menstruation in women leads to an increase in hormones as well as pimples.
Oily and Bacterial Skin
Another factor is oily skin, which is an oil gland overactivity. Although any skin can become oily when exposed to hot and humid weather, this hyperactivity of the oil glands affects those who have a genetic predisposition to the disorder. Furthermore, bacteria can form when the pores become clogged by the oil.
High Stress Levels
High levels of stress are noticed to cause acne as well as hinder healing of existing acne. Stress hormones such as cortisol boost oil production, often leading to more pimples.
Diet
The food you eat, especially dairy and processed foods, are also thought to contribute to the appearance of acne. This is because these foods cause blood sugar to spike and increase insulin levels. As such, an increase of fats and oils released from the skin’s oil glands can happen, leading to thicker oils and more pimples.
Medication
Some prescription medications that can lead to acne. These include antipsychotic medications, steroid drugs, and testosterone. It is important to consult your doctor should you experience any of these issues.
Getting rid of pimples is a frustrating process as there are no known cures. However, changing your lifestyle and taking medication prescribed by your doctor can help you deal with the symptoms and reduce their frequency.
