What is The Science of Bodybuilding?
The science of bodybuilding is the study of physical fitness, nutrition, and exercise that focuses specifically on the art and sport of bodybuilding. The science of bodybuilding enables the bodybuilder to gain or maintain muscle mass and strength, enhance overall fitness, and achieve desired body composition.
What is Muscle Mass?
Muscle mass is made up of two parts: lean body mass and lean body fat. Lean body mass is composed of skeletal muscle, fascia, organs, and other soft tissues. Lean body fat is made up of fat cells responsible for providing energy and warmth to the body.
What is Strength?
Strength is determined by the ability of muscles to lift or move weights. Muscles produce strength when they contract, or shorten and relax, allowing the weight or resistance (load) to move. The heavier the weight is, the more strength of muscle is required.
How Does Diet Relate to Bodybuilding?
Diet plays an important role in bodybuilding. An adequate level of daily nutrient intake is necessary for muscle growth. The body needs the right combination of macronutrients and micronutrients to build and repair tissue, manufacture hormones, and fuel exercise. A balanced diet of protein, carbohydrates, and fat along with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and plenty of water is essential.
Do Supplements Matter?
Supplements are not necessary to build muscle; however, they can be valuable for bodybuilders. Protein supplements, creatine, branch-chain amino acids, and other sports nutrition products can be used to enhance muscular development and performance.
Do Genetics Play a Role?
There are certain genetic factors that can affect the rate and amount of muscle growth. Specific body types can require more or less exercise and different types of training to reach desired goals. However, genetics does not determine muscle potential, as everyone has the capacity to build muscle and strength.
The science of bodybuilding includes understanding how the body gains or maintains muscle mass, develops strength, and performs optimally when diet and supplementation is taken into consideration. With a proper training program and commitment, everyone has the potential to benefit from bodybuilding and develop an improved health and physique.
