The Different Types of Testosterone and Their Functions

Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone, responsible for a range of biological features related to sex and reproduction. It also plays an important role in both men and women’s health, from libido to bone density. Testosterone is produced in different forms, with each variant serving different functions.

Types of Testosterone

Biology recognizes four types of Testosterone:

  • Testosterone Enanthate: Testosterone Enanthate is an injectable form of Testosterone with an extended release period. It is the most commonly prescribed Testosterone ester, typically given as a first-line treatment in clinical settings.
  • Testosterone Cypionate: Testosterone Cypionate is another form of the hormone available in injectable form. Its key advantage is the availability of a higher concentration of the hormone per milliliter.
  • Testosterone Propionate: Testosterone Propionate is an injectable form of the hormone, with a shorter release period than both Enanthate and Cypionate. It is typically prescribed for performance enhancement reasons rather than medical ones.
  • Testosterone Topical Gel: Testosterone Gel is most often prescribed for individuals who apart from the sexual characteristics, experience other health problems linked to low T, such as osteoporosis.

Functions of Testosteron

Testosterone plays many roles within the human body, a few of which include:

  • Maintaining a normal sex drive
  • Regulating general physical health
  • Maintaining fertility, spermatogenesis and ejaculation
  • Producing red blood cells
  • Building and maintaining muscle mass
  • Increasing bone density
  • Maintaining mental and cognitive health

Testosterone and Health

Testosterone is closely linked with overall health, especially in men. Although testosterone levels naturally decrease with age, there can be a range of symptoms associated with a drop in testosterone, including fatigue, weight gain, depression, reduced libido and even erectile dysfunction.

For men whose T-levels are lower than normal for their age, testosterone therapy may be beneficial in restoring the hormone to a healthy, naturally-occurring level. However, testosterone therapy can carry certain risks and not every man is an ideal candidate. It is important to speak to a doctor before deciding on any course of hormone replacement therapy.

Summary

Testosterone is an essential hormone, produced in different forms and playing an important role in sexual health and physical and cognitive health. While low T can be treated with testosterone therapy, it is important to remember that it carries risks and should only be considered with close consultation with a doctor.
