Unexplained Weight Gain and Health
We all hope to stay healthy and maintain a healthy weight all throughout our lives, but sometimes, regardless of how much we work out or how healthy we eat, our weight can still unexpectedly increase. This can be extremely stressful and disheartening, but there may be some underlying causes for this unexplained weight gain.
Here are 10 Reasons You May Be Experiencing Unexplained Weight Gain and Health:
1) Eating Too Much
You might be overeating, either because of boredom or emotional issues. Even though you may be eating healthy foods, it’s still possible to eat too much, so make sure to practice mindful eating and pay attention to portion sizes.
2) Eating Too Quickly
It takes our bodies some time to register that we’ve had enough to eat. If you eat too quickly, it can cause your body to take much longer to recognize that you’ve had enough food and you’ll eat more than you realize.
3) Not Getting Enough Sleep
Without enough sleep, your hormones can get out of balance, which can cause cravings for unhealthy snacks and overeating. Make sure you are getting at least 7-9 hours of sleep each night.
4) Drinking Too Much Alcohol
Alcohol is high in calories, and if you’re drinking too much, it can lead to weight gain.
5) Eating Processed Foods
Processed foods are filled with empty calories, which can cause you to take in more calories than you need. Try to limit your intake of processed foods and opt for fresh, whole foods, whenever possible.
6) Not Being Physically Active Enough
Regular exercise and physical activity helps to promote weight loss and maintain a healthy weight. Make sure you are getting enough exercise each day to help prevent weight gain.
7) Hormonal Imbalance
Hormonal imbalances can cause fluctuations in your weight and appetite. Women, especially, can be prone to hormonal issues, such as during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause.
8) Not Drinking Enough Water
When we are dehydrated, our bodies can interpret this as hunger, resulting in overeating. Make sure you’re drinking enough water throughout the day to help prevent hunger cravings.
Stress can cause us to turn to comfort foods as a way to cope, as well as make us hungrier than usual. Try to find healthy ways to reduce stress, such as exercising or meditating.
10) Certain Medications
Some medications, such as steroids and certain antidepressants, can cause weight gain. Talk to your doctor if you think your medication may be causing you to gain weight.
If you’ve been experiencing unexplained weight gain and are concerned about your health, make sure to speak to your doctor. They will be able to help identify any underlying issues that may be causing it and offer any advice for how to get back to a healthy weight.
